Hanabanilla |
|
Lake Hanabanilla is considered the only mountainous lake in Cuba and is ideal for nature lovers. It’s found in the Guamuhaya massif in the Manicaragua area in Villa Clara province in central Cuba.
Called the ‘small basket of gold’ in the Arawak language, Hanabanilla continues to be not only a place rich in natural and economic resources, but rich in history and traditions. It is, at the same time, a protected area, declared a Protected National Area in Cuba.
The Guamuhaya massif is found 364 meters above sea level. The region sits between Villa Clara, Cienfuegos and Sanctí Spiritus. From here it’s possible to enjoy various ecotourism adventures.
Lake Hanabanilla has a vast lake surface of around 14.9 kilometer squared and is between 30 to 40 meters deep and is fed by three rivers: the rivers Negro, Hanabanilla and Guanayara allowing it to contain around 300 million cubic meters of water. From here one can visit the Waterfall of Love that falls into a small pool.
You can organize trips around the lake, where big mouth black bass live, and trips to local villages in the area, enjoy the waterfall and the Río Negro restaurant with its panoramic view of the reservoir and its tropical vegetation.
