Bayamo City |
|
Bayamo was the second city founded in Cuba by Spaniard Diego Velázquez on November 5 1513 and was proclaimed San Salvador de Bayamo, the capital of Granma province.
It’s one of the most important cities in Cuba, and the principal economic, industrial, social and cultural center of the province. It’s also considered the Cradle of Cuban Nationality where, for the first time, the National Anthem of Cuba was sung in 1868. Bayamo’s historic core was declared a National Monument on October 10 1978.
Bayamo has the historic honor of being known as the capital of the First Republic in Arms during the independence struggle in the 19th century. Bayamo’s residents decided to set fire to their own city rather than surrendering to the Spanish colonialists in 1869.
Bayamo is also where the Father of the Nation Carlos Manuel de Céspedes was born. It is also known as the place where the words and music of the National Anthem - still used today — were created. The national anthem was sung, for the first time, on October 20 1868; today this auspicious date is when the annual Day of Cuban Culture is celebrated.
One of the attractions of Bayamo is that one of the old forms of transport from the colonial era is still used — horse drawn carts — thanks to craftsmen who have preserved the art of constructing this form of transport.
How to get there?
