Cuba Information
Camaguey Province
Cuba Destinations - Camaguey Province With more than 120 kilometers of mainly virgin beaches, Camagüey — the largest province in Cuba, but the least populated — has enormous potential for tourist development. The province’s capital enjoys the same name as the province and was founded in 1514 by Diego Velázquez as Santa María del Puerto Príncipe. Camagüey is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Cuba.

The historic city center is the largest in Cuba and is made up of 382 blocks; it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. Camagüey is known as the city of tinajones (enormous earthenware jars) for their use in the patios of homes to collect rainwater.

The Mirror of Patience, considered the first Cuban literary document, was written in Camagüey by Silvestre de Balboa; Camagüey is also considered the cradle of important intellectuals such as the romantic writer Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, and the National Poet of Cuba Nicolás Guillén.

The province boasts various important historic communities such as Guáimaro and Jimaguayú, places where the two Cuban Constitutions were signed at the end of the 19th century.

Además tejió una hermosa historia de amor con su esposa Amalia Simoni que quedó plasmada en numerosas cartas, que están consideradas como de las más cimeras dentro del epistolario literario de la isla. Camagüey is also known as the land of The Elder. Ignacio Agramonte was one of the most prominent leaders of Cuba’s first war of independence in the Camagüey region. For his military strategy, his military formations, and his bravery, Agramonte was awarded prizes as the Military Leader of the Liberation Army. Every Cuban knows him by his name as The Elder. There’s also a beautiful story of the love he had for his wife Amalia Simoni which was captured in numerous letters; these love letters are considered the greatest example of their type within the collected letters literature of the island.
