Cuba Information

Cayo Coco
Cuba Destinations - Cayo Coco Cayo Coco is the fourth largest island which surrounds the main island of Cuba with an area of 370 kms sq, and with the advantage of offering 22 kilometers of outstanding beaches, backed by mangroves and coconut palms.

It’s connected to the mainland of Cuba by a 17 kilometer causeway. The island is known for the preservation and protection of the surrounding ecosystem. As well as the gorgeous, fine white-sand beaches and crystal clear waters, Cayo Coco is a paradise to watch birds, and is known, especially, as the home to species such as the Grey heron, flamingo (the flock, one of the largest in the world, is thought to be more than 30,000 birds), and other waders. The area is also the favorite habitat of cormorants, woodpeckers, mockingbirds, pelicans and other species of ducks.

The island boasts 10 kilometers of coral reef that reaches some 10 to 30 meters in parts, and features a rich and diverse reef life. Scuba divers can see Atlantic tarpon, sand mackerel, huge snappers, sharks, barracudas and groupers. The Coco Dive Center offers packages and dive services.

Of the island’s beaches, Las Coloradas, Jaula and Los Flamencos hold the greatest interest to holiday-makers; they all feature dive centers, too.

The origin of the name of the island is due to a bird known as the White Ibis and known locally as the Coco Bird which, with its bright colors, brings personality to the region.

Some 200 animal species live on Cayo Coco including birds, reptiles such as iguanas, and more than 360 species of plants call the island home, some of which are endemic to Cayo Coco itself.

Cayo Coco features first class hotels, artificial lakes, swimming pools and various entertainment options, nighttime shows and services to guarantee an unforgettable stay.
