Cuba Information
Cayo Largo
Cuba Destinations - Cayo Largo Cayo Largo is located off the south coast of Cuba deep in the Caribbean sea, and found at the far end of the Canarreos archipelago. The island is 37 km sq and is found 135 kilometers from Nueva Gerona (capital of the Isle of Youth Special Municipality), 125 kilometers from Cienfuegos, 177 kilometers from Havana, and some 177 kilometers from Varadero.

At the same time, Cayo Largo is associated with neighboring small islands called Cayo Rico, Cayo Cantiles, and Cayo Iguana which boast unrivaled natural beauty. These also form part of the Canarreos archipelago. The name Cayo Largo means long island. The island also has archeological value as here researchers have found remains belonging to the Siboney people, one of the first aboriginal peoples of Cuba.

In 1494, Admiral Christopher Columbus visited this small island on his second voyage to Cuba. Sometime after, Cayo Largo acted as a shelter for the pirates and corsairs who operated in these vast waters of the Caribbean.

Cayo Largo is surrounded by six beaches: Sirena, Lindamar, Blanca, los Cocos, Tortuga and Luna. It’s also home to wildlife including iguanas and giant marine turtles. These turtles are actually protected under a marine program; between April and September, the coasts of this area serve as places for Loggerheads, Green Turtles, and Tortoiseshell to lay their eggs.

Cayo Largo is surrounded by more than 30 kilometers of coral reef where visitors can scuba dive and have the opportunity to see endangered Black Coral in its natural habitat.
