Holguin Province is Cuba's fourth largest. The mountains of the region are home to deposits of nickel and cobalt which have been, and still are being, extensively mined. These industries play an important role in the productivity and wealth of the area, the main nickel mines and processing plants are situated around the town of Moa on the north coast, east of the city of Holguin.
Sugar plantations and citrus orchards also play a prominent role in the local economy, and the fishing industry, although small, complements the province's impressive role as a key producer in the Cuban economy.
The north coast has been a substantial amount of development over the last 10 to 15 years and the beaches of Playa Guardalavaca are now firmly established with foreign tour operators.
Holguin City
This city, 760km/495 miles southeast of Havana, is busy and not particularly attractive. But if you pass through, look in on the main square for its Art-Deco theatre, art gallery, and eclectic display of historical exhibits inside the Museo Provincial. The fine Carlos de la Torre Natural History Museum, just south of the square on Calle Maceo, in another colonial mansion, has a large collection of indigenous snail shells in dazzling colours.
To the west of Holguin is a vantage point, Loma de la Cruz, which offers wonderful views over the city and across the province.
The luxurious Paradisus Río de Oro hotel is situated in a privileged and exotic natural setting. For adults only (over 18 years)
Unlimited scuba-diving included in price!!!
With a comprehensive array of all inclusive facilities at a very reasonable price, this resort makes an ideal base from which to explore the area or to simply relax and enjoy its many comforts.
Those who enjoy nature and adventure tourism will find in Holguín a space of privilege for these activities: the national park of La Mensura, habitat for about 300 endemic species of Cuban flora and where Villa Pinares de Mayarí is located.
Conceived as a Natural Reserve, Cayo Saetía is kept as a wilderness area, little trodden upon by men. This status has protected its original flora and fauna up to this date, becoming in an enticing paradise for visitors because of its virgin beaches and its exotic flora and fauna
A friendly resort positioned just a few steps from the beautiful Guardalavaca beach, this hotel offers very good value with a wide range of different room types and recreational activities for the whole family.

Hotel is very nice on white sand beach. Beach is with some natural shade as well as man made sun protecting umbrelas. Food is excellent with wide choises of Cuban and European meals. People are very friendly and will do everything to please you and make your vacation unforgetable. Rooms are very clean and neat. In hotel you have 24 hour bar-restaurant, some shops with souvenirs, cigars etc and small markets where local people sell mostly souvenirs. Every night is different entertainment program. Parsonally I recomend trip by helicopter to mountain waterfalls.

My wife and I have gone to Holguin the last 6 years and have yet to find any problems worth mentioning. It is a busy city with busy city problems. The people of Cuba are the most kind and generous we have ever had the pleasure of visiting, and we have been to several countries(England, Germany,Mexico,Austraila,Brazil). What a refreshing change to meet with teenagers that are respectful and polite, and happy to go to school. What a delight to wake up on a weekday morning and hear children laughing on their way to school, may I add they were walking and happy. How refreshing to go to a dance, with hundreds of teenagers present, not one instance of trouble of any sort. Going for a walk on a Saturday night to the local park and seeing hundreds of people sitting and enjoying conversations with one another, groups of teenagers talking and laughing, enjoying each others company. We have traveled to several small cities in the area, Banes,Baracoa,Moa, to mention a few and the PEOPLE of each city are simply the best you can meet, kind, courteous, and generous beyond my wildest dreams. You have to mix with the locals to get the real CUBA. Love the local beans and rice, have never tasted better. My wife and I will be going to Holguin, Cuba for as long as we are able to travel.
