NOTICE: Due to renovation works, Ambos Mundos Hotel will be closed from August 23rd to October 31st, 2010. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause you.
Though the figure of Ernest Hemingway is immediately and almost invariably invoked in any description of the hotel, the Ambos Mundos' most attractive attribute is doubtless its magnificent location: steps away from the Plaza de Armas, the restored, 1920s establishment stands at one of the liveliest intersections in the Old Town, close to just about all of the most interesting sites of Havana's colonial centre.
Hemingway, who stayed and wrote most of For Whom the Bell Tolls here during the 1930s (his room, 511, is today a much-frequented museum), is not the only famous writer or luminary the hotel welcomed in times past: Federico García Lorca is rumoured to have made a stop here, and Cuban filmmaker Tomás Gutierrez Alea (director of Strawberry and Chocolate) was among the young intellectuals who participated in the festivities once held in its roof garden.
A spacious and tastefully decorated lobby opens to Obispo and Mercaderes, main arteries of the sightseeing circuit often crowded with tourists. The lobby, decorated with an attractive and modern-looking corner fountain, housing art exhibits and featuring a piano bar where jazz and other musicians occasionally perform, is itself often crowded with visitors and is a lively stopover in its own right. The old, 1930s elevator, though said to demand some patience, is a charming detail.
The Del Monte meeting room, with capacity for as many as 100 people, can accommodate conferences, business gatherings and weddings.
Not all of the Ambos Mundos' rooms have views, but those that do overlook the cobbled and picturesque expanse of Obispo and Mercaderes, which benefit from their proximity to the Plaza de Armas: costumed performers, including mulatta florists in colonial attire, old fortune tellers, a squad of soldiers in period English uniforms and a carnivalesque troupe of actors on stilts, are sure to enliven these vistas during your stay at the hotel.
Though close to the action, the Ambos Mundos is not lacking in the quietude and intimacy one will probably seek after a day around town.

Hotel Ambos Mundos - Hotel Details
Address: Calle Obispo No. 153 esq. a Mercaderes. Ciudad de La Habana
Standard Room... from US$110 --> US$63
Sparsely furnished and with a rather pale colour scheme, accommodations at the Ambos Mundos may strike some as somewhat plain. Rooms with windows, however, get plenty of natural light and have privileged views of the picturesque surroundings (the traditional, red-tiled colonial houses are particularly attractive). Atrium-facing rooms get no sunlight but benefit from greater quietude.
Air Conditioning
Phone
Satellite TV
Safety Deposit Box
Room Service
Hair Dryer
Minibar
Private Bathroom
Twin beds
Power 110V/60Hz
Cold & hot water
Junior Suite Room... from US$158
Two mini-suites are balconied and have excellent views of the intersection. One corner suite has a rather awkward L-shape that makes for a cramped feeling, but extra space is clearly the advantage offered by these rooms.
At the vibrant intersection of Obispo and Mercaderes, the Ambos Mundos is just down the street from the Plaza de Armas and close the Old Town's other major squares. Horse-driven carriages, parked outside, offer tours down cobbled thoroughfares and historic sites of interest. The Bodeguita del Medio bar and restaurant is less than three blocks away.

I recently stayed at the Ambos Mundos Hotel with 3 friends (all female and all over 60)It was a perfect choice for sight -seeing as everything was within walking distance.
The hotel itself was slightly past its best but certainly adequate for our needs. Breakfast on the sun terrace was the best part of our stay.
There were a few problems but not enough to spoil our holiday. The shower leaked and the floor of the bathroom was permanently wet. Clean towels were in short supply, so I would suggest you take your own. Also, toilet rolls seemed to be rationed.
Apart from these problems we had a very enjoyable stay and absolutely loved Havana.

I wish all the best to all the staff at this hotel, they are really nice and cook for and attend guests in the very best way. Bye to Yary from Miami, I loved your balcony, from where I looked out over all of Havana. Every time I come to Cuba I come here to visit my familly.

We stayed at the hotel in February 2009 at the end of a great holiday in Havana. Everything about the hotel and its staff was perfect. Especially the rooftop bar/restaurant and the music of Los Tainos

Hotel Ambos Mundos Reviews: "Wonderful place" user a CubaHotelReservation.com user, romania - date posted: January 5, 2009
We stay in Ambos for one week at the beginning of October. Is a very good place to stay, especially the terrace is a wonderful place in the morning but also in the afternoon. The Hotel can be considered at 3+ stars in Europe, I understood was completely refurbished in 2006. One recommendation, go to the meal early in morning other way there is no open breakfast. Very good place to stay, in case you want to be close to the old Havana.

Was the end of our holidays of the 2006's summer in CUba, we spent 5 weeks living wonderfully with our cubans friends, and with our son that is living and studying in this wonderful isle. At the end my wife thought that we must spent our last night in a hotel in Havana, and we select Ambos Mundos, because we are in love with Old Havana. It was a good selection, in all senses, it was a brief stay but we have wonderful memories. We recommend it absolutly

I stayed at the Ambos Mundos for a week in April 2005. It was very clean, the staff friendly and helpful, almost all spoke english, and it was a pleasant experience. It was a little noisy due to the construction of a building next door, and the music from the street went on until well after midnight, but overall it is an excellent hotel and I would definitely stay there again.

The accomodation's basic, but the roof terrace bar's pleasant and the staff unbelievably friendly and helpful above and beyond the call of duty. Fantastic location right in the centre of old Havana.

Hotel Ambos Mundos Reviews: "Romantic Alternative to Varadero AI's" user a CubaHotelReservation.com user, united states of america - date posted: April 1, 2005
After an all day, and rather circuitous, journey from northern New England, where snow still covered the ground, we (wife, self, and daughters, aged 12 and 7) found ourselves looking down from the balcony of our fourth floor room onto the vibrant street scenes below, at the coner of Obisbo and Mercadores Strees in the heart of romantic Habana Vieja. Salsa music wafted on tropical air from the nearby Plaza de Armas and, even though it was midnight, there were many people strolling about the streets below. We were fascinated; we watched, hypnotically, for more than an hour, 'til travel fatigue overcame us. Next morning, before setting out on a tour of the city, we ejoyed a wonderful buffet breakfast at the open-air rooftop restaurant. Before heading down to Santiago de Cuba, we enjoyed two more nights at the Ambos Mundos, plus another two nights before departing Cuba. The staff was OUTSTANDING, personable, solicitious, often even anticipating our needs. The lobby piano bar, just off the street, is a nice place to relax and have a snack. The rooftop, open air restaurant was a particular favorite for breakfasts. Although the hotel lacks a swimming pool, who needs it, with so much to see and do in Habana! Like Hemingway did in the 1930's and 1940's (his room #501 is preserved as a mini-museum), we hope to return again and again to the Ambos Mundos, and would recommend it to anyone who treasures romance and individuality.
