In February 2014, Camagüey celebrated its 500th anniversary birthday; this celebration saw the restoration of several hotels in the city located in historic buildings.
The Hotel Encanto El Marqués is a relatively new tourist concept. Old buildings are being restored in historic cities across the island. In this way, not only is the significant architectural heritage preserved, but cultural tourism is promoted as well.
Built in 1920, El Marqués stands out for its eclectic architectural splendor set in a quiet street, but very close to the city’s restaurants, theaters, cinemas and galleries. It’s also close to the historic attractions of the city center, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.
The Cathedral, the Agramonte Park, and other places such as the church and plaza of San Juan de Dios, and El Gallo Plaza, are some 100 meters away and can be visited.
Camagüey is the cradle of renowned intellectuals such as Nicolás Guillén, and Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda. Both their homes can be visited, and are only 150 meters, and 350 meters away respectively.
The Marqués features classic, elegant rooms, high ceilings, and early 20th-century furniture with beautiful fabrics in shades of blue and cream. This decor creates an atmosphere of history and intimacy, but the rooms come with modern facilities.
The entire building looks sophisticated, from the corridors with their beautiful tiled floors, the wooden armchairs, potted plants, and marble pedestals (which are raised and adorned by statues of graceful figures). The bar serves delicious cocktails which can be enjoyed in the adjacent patio.
