Topes de Collantes, tucked into the Sierra del Escambray mountains very near Trinidad, is a natural park with an enviable variety of endemic flora and fauna. The unique, healthy climate here and natural beauty of the area make it especially inviting for hiking tours.
Los Helechos is a simple, unpretentious mountain hotel. It is designed for travelers looking for easy access to the outdoors, rather than those who prefer pampering (for luxury, head 20 kilometers down the road to Trinidad). For those who like numbers, it’s a 3-star hotel, perched 800 meters above sea level.
If you’ve got a passion for hiking, nature, waterfalls, fresh air and flora and fauna, Los Helechos is a good base. The architecture and interior design here are minimalist, integrating well with the natural environment. The complex boasts a small indoor swimming pool (heated), a restaurant, a diminutive discotheque and bowling alley.
Several on-site nature paths give visitors an easy, up-close look at a variety of local flora and fauna. There is also an interesting, established trail system for all level of hikers. Professionally guided hikes are reasonably priced at CUC 10 per person (subject to changes), including lunch and transfer. Guides are local and a wealth of knowledge and expertise.
