Cuba Information
Cuba Destinations - Manzanillo Manzanillo is the second most important city in the province of Granma. It’s known as the Pearl of Guacanayabo as it’s located next to the gulf of the same name, the same gulf that has powered the economic, social and culture development of this eastern Cuban city.

Known also as the Cradle of Son music, it’s one of the regions where musicians play traditional Son, a Cuban musical genre known around the world. Another compelling characteristic is that during the city’s carnivals you can hear the rhythm of the legendary Eastern Organ.

In the Manzanillo area you’ll find the ruins of La Demajagua sugar mill known for where the war for Cuban independence began on October 10 1868, and a place of symbolic significance for all Cubans. Today it’s known as the La Demajagua National Park.

Manzanillo is also the home of trova singer Carlos Puebla, writer of the popular song Hasta Siempre Comandante dedicated to Ernesto Che Guevara, and played by the well-known Orchestra Original of Manzanillo.

Another characteristic of this region is the excellent open-air band concerts held in the Céspedes Park where musicians from across the generations come together and play traditional and contemporary Cuban pieces.
