Matanzas City |
|
Matanzas is known as the cradle of Cuban culture for the beauty of its bay, the valley of Yumurí and its music. It’s also on the road to the famous beach at Varadero.
Matanzas was founded in 1693 and became important during the 19th century when it became the sugar capital of Cuba, a distinction that was made possible due to its bay and infrastructure for shipping sugar.
During the first decades of that century the most important intellectuals of the era used to meet for what was known as ‘La Tertulia de Domingo del Monte’, a cultural meeting of like-minded intellectuals. The first romantic poet of Latin America, the Cuban poet José María Heredia, would participate in these cultural meetings, alongside painters, musicians and novelists who came from different regions of the country to talk and update each other on not only cultural matters but political affairs. This is the reason that Matanzas is known as the Athens of Cuba.
