Cuba Information
Pinar del rio
Cuba Destinations - Pinar del rio Described as the New Philippines in the 1770s, this region of Cuban territory was eventually granted its current name in 1778. It’s here in the province that two Biospheres can be found: the Sierra del Rosario and the Guanahacabibes peninsula.

This mountainous group, along with the addition of the Sierra de los Órganos, make up the extensive Guaniguanico Cordillera where the best landscapes and flora and fauna of the region can be found. The sierra is also home to the mountain known as El Pan de Guajaibón (699m above sea level), the steepest mountain in western Cuba.

The Valley of Viñales National Park extends 132 km2 in the Sierra de los Órganos and is notable for its impressive mountains of vertical slopes and rounded summits covered by abundant vegetation, known as mogotes. Particularly interesting is the number of caves found inside the mogotes which are of great interest to cavers.

The Indian Cave, reached by the navigable San Vicente River, and the nearby River San Miguel, and the Santo Tomás cavern system with more than 45 kilometers of buried galleries in the nearby Sierra de Quemados, constitute a significant natural heritage in the area and are perfect for walks and ecotourism adventures.

One of the most interesting of the countryside walks for visitors is the walk to Los Acuáticos, found by walking from the Sierra del Infierno (where there is a local community that used to pay homage to water, hence the name, attributing curative properties to the local water) to the Valle de Dos Hermanas where you can enjoy an enormous, colorful painted mural on the wall of a mogote, known locally as the Mural of Prehistory.

The natural attractions of Pinar del Río can also be found in the Biosphere Reserve of the Sierra del Rosario where you’ll find the Soroa orchid garden, the most comprehensive in the country with 750 species of the flower, and the tourist complex, Las Terrazas, which was the first sustainable tourism experience set up in the countryside in Cuba.

At the far western edge of the province, you’ll find the Biosphere Reserve of the Guanahacabibes peninsula, an emerging tourist destination, bordered by two natural reserves: El Veral and Cabo Corrientes, plus an international dive center at María La Gorda with almost 40 dive sites in a region of plenty of black coral clusters. Those who like water-sports can also head to Cayo Levisa, and particularly to a site identified as Saint Charles’ Crown, to practice water-sports.

The Roncalli lighthouse at the San Antonio Point at the extreme end of the Guanahacabibes peninsula the faces the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. Here, visitors can find places to hunt and fish. Closer to Havana, in the same province, are the well known medicinal and mineral baths of San Diego de los Baños which represents other possible sources of recreation in the province. However, it’s the extensive tobacco plantations cultivating the best leaves in the world for the Cuban cigar that visitors feel obliged to see, as well as tasting a unique artisanal liquor produced in Pinar del Río city known as La Guayabita del Pinar.
